    Innovation Isn’t a Lightning Bolt – It’s a System
    Strategic Horizons Consulting, Kenneth Collins

When business owners hear “innovation,” many picture some game-changing product launch or a mad genius scribbling on a whiteboard until inspiration strikes. The truth? That version of innovation makes for great movies but terrible business advice.

Innovation doesn’t have to be flashy or expensive. Most of the time, it’s about small, smart improvements made consistently over time – and those can (and should) be built into the rhythm of how you operate.

Innovation Happens When Systems Allow It

If your team is too busy putting out fires to suggest better ways of doing things, innovation is dead on arrival. Innovation thrives when:

    • People have space to think and experiment
    • There’s a system for testing new ideas safely
    • Feedback is encouraged and actually used
    • Mistakes are seen as data – not a reason to punish

Want more innovation? Then stop waiting for an “aha!” moment and start building an environment where good ideas can emerge, be tested, and scaled.

    Process, Not Pressure

Business owners often ask, “How do I get my team to be more innovative?” Here's the blunt truth: you can’t force innovation, but you can create the conditions for it.

    • Hold idea sessions regularly – not just when you’re desperate
    • Reward suggestions (even the small ones)
    • Run micro-tests to pilot new approaches without betting the farm
    • Celebrate lessons, even when ideas don’t pan out

The more your team sees that innovation is part of the process – not a one-time demand – the more they’ll buy in and contribute.

    Innovation is a Leadership Responsibility

If you, the business owner, shoot down every new idea because “we’ve always done it this way,” your team will stop trying. Innovation starts at the top – with curiosity, openness, and the willingness to change.

Show your team that improvement is a priority, not a nuisance. Talk about it. Ask for it. Make it safe. And then act on it.

Key 12 - Continuous Improvement & InnovationBuild a System That Invites Feedback

Continuous improvement isn’t about chasing every trend or reinventing your business every quarter. It’s about building a system that invites feedback, rewards smart ideas, and evolves with your market. If you want to build a business that stays relevant and resilient, Key #12 is a must-read. Download it today and start creating the kind of company that doesn’t just survive – it leads.
